Fire crews in Meade County have been called to a couple of brush fires that are believed to have been sparked by passing trains.
Around 1:20 pm Saturday (11/12), the Ekron Fire Department was called to an area CSX railroad tracks off of Pam’s Lane at the back of the Popular Subdivision near Ekron. When crews arrived on the scene they discovered a small brush fire several feet from the railroad. Fire crews were able to gain control of the flames within a half hour and fully extinguish the fire within an hour.
A similar situation was reported in Old Weldon Monday (11/14) afternoon around 4:15 pm when crews from the Meade County, Ekron and Flaherty Fire Departments were called to a section of railroad tracks between the Old Weldon Road Crossing and Olin Road. Crews worked two and half hours to gain control of five brush fires. Firemen was able to extinguish the fire after being on the scene about three hours.
All of the fires were along the same CSX owned railroad and are believed to started from the sparks of passing rail cars. The current drought conditions along with dry leaves and tree debris are the perfect combination of enhanced fire danger.
A reminder of the Fall Forest Fire Season burning ban remains in place until December 15 making illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any wood land or grassland areas between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm in the state of Kentucky. Some counties across southern Kentucky have issued local burning bans prohibiting all open out door burning due to the drought conditions.
