A local team has realized the sweetness of victory following a rough season as the Meade County High School Boys Basketball Team, they appear in the state’s Sweet 16 Tournament Thursday (3/16).
The team began the 2016-17 season with an 8-1 record, but star senior James Baker severely injured his thumb during a Christmas tournament. Benched for nearly two months, the team played and practiced without Baker. The Greenwave went on to lose 19 of their next 20 games. Frustration could be seen on and off the court as the team struggled during practices and games.
Head Coach Jason Tripure said the players came to practice and each game frustrated but determined. The team learned how to fill in the gaps of not having Baker there, which the coach says made each player better and more well-rounded on the court.
Now with Baker back in the game, the wins are returned allowing the team claim a spot in the state’s Sweet 16 tournament after winning the Third Region Tournament game last weekend. The team have been honored by their fellow classmates and the community with pep rallies and proclamations by the Meade County Fiscal Court, Brandenburg City Council and State Representative Jeff Greer.
The Greenwaves will takes Cooper High School on Thursday (3/16) at 8 pm at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
