A popular tourist attraction at Fort Knox will close for six months as crews will work on a list of renovations.
The General George Patton Museum will close for about six months beginning November 1. The museum will be renovated and receive several upgrades designed to improve visitors’ experiences. The list of improvements are to include a new roof and HVAC system, repaving and widening the sidewalk between the parking lot and the museum, and repaving the visitor parking lot.
Other structural improvements include: assuring restrooms meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, replacing the glass and metal in the museum’s atrium, adding new audiovisual equipment to the museum’s theater, replacing exterior doors, along with adding a canopy to both the entrance and sidewalk for visitor comfort during inclement weather.
Crew will prepare the museum and its grounds to provide direct access from Highway 31W. Once the renovations are complete the museum will have different artifacts for new exhibits along with a more efficient artifact storage system. Among the new exhibits will be a new ROTC Hall of Fame and Fort Knox history exhibits.
The facility should be reopened before the summer travel season next year.
