A man was arrested in Hart County after assaulting a police officer during a DUI arrest Sunday afternoon.
Around 4 p.m., Kentucky State Police and the Hart County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible injury collision on Hammonsville Road in Hart County.
According to a uniform citation, the driver, William Balthrop of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, was “extremely irate” and was beating his chest. Officers said it was apparent Balthrop was under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
He was then arrested and placed in a police vehicle. Officers say Balthrop began beating the rear glass of the police vehicle, nearly breaking it, and was removed. He then began clawing and grabbing the deputy.
Balthrop was further restrained and sedated, and then transported to T.J. Samson Hospital. After receiving medical clearance, he was lodged in the Hart County Jail.
Balthrop was charged with resisting arrest, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a substance (first offense), leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid or assistance and third-degree assault of a police officer.
