Members of the Brandenburg City Council met during their regular meeting on Monday (8/12) night.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mayor David Pace conducted a moment of silence in remembrance of councilman William “Bill” Basham, who passed away on August 5. Mayor David Pace read a resolution honor Basham for his years of community service and time on the council.
During the business session, the council awarded the August Yard of The Month to Mike And Bettie Parr who resides on High Street. The council revisited the second reading to a golf cart ordinance. The council heard the first reading during the July meeting. After discussion related to the terms of the ordinance, the ordinance failed due to a lack of a motion to approve the second reading. The proposed ordinance would set guidelines that a golf cart would nee to meet in order be operated on city streets including a license fee every 2 years and a initial inspection.
The council approved a resolution to accept Main Street into the city maintenance system. The action completes a process of several years capping construction on the city’s historic route. Mayor David Pace said the paving crews were able to stratify issues related to previous paving work by the state. The city will now take over maintaining the entire length of Main Street from Broadway to the entrance to River Front Park.
Mayor David Pace brought to the council’s attention a growing issue of parked vehicles on city streets which in some cases are causing traffic hazards. He asked council members to review the issue and observe over any issues before to allow then to decide if an amendment to the current city street ordinance is needed.
The council approved a the second reading of a rezoning request by Carl Austin on property located at 757 Bypass Road. The council did not discuss the proposed employment occupation tax due to the passing of the Councilman Basham. Mayor David Pace said that the council will have a work session or special called meeting before the September regular meeting to discuss and review the issue further.
Mayor Pace said a special called meeting will be needed before September 5 in order for the council to make a appointment to fill the vacant seat on the council. City officials are seeking recommendations of residents who would be interested in serving on the council. The requirements to serve include the candidate must be 18 years or over, must reside in the city for at least 1 full year, and be able to lawfully hold an public office.
