Scammers are finding new ways to con soon-to-be victims out of their money.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are now using technology to “spoof” a phone number so it looks like you are receiving a call from a law enforcement agency.
The sheriff’s office said get the callers name, immediately hang up and call the respective agency they advised they were with to verify information.
Deputies say they have been receiving numerous reports advising residents are getting phone calls from people pretending to be sheriff’s deputies, deputy jailers, court clerks and police officers.
The scammers falsely tell people they missed jury duty, have an unpaid fine, have an outstanding arrest warrant or that people have a loved one in the jail.
The sheriff’s office urges everyone to get this message out to family, friends and co-workers.
