A room full of citizens looked on as the Brandenburg City Council moved forward on a re introduction of a proposed occupation tax ordinance during their regular meeting Monday (6/9) night.
The council acted upon their previous decision to start a new discussion on the proposed ordinance by introducing a new version. Council members first selected a draft ordinance with a rate of a half of a percent. The voted fail by a Mayor David Pace voting no on the tie vote. The council then selected a draft ordinance with a rate of one third of a percent on a majority vote then heard the first reading. Mayor Pace reminded the council that the ordinance can be modified before the second reading if needed upon input from the council and the public.
A special called meeting will be held on Monday, June 23 beginning at 6 PM at Brandenburg City Hall facilities to allow the public to provide comments on the proposed ordinance. Members of the public who wish to speak at the special meeting need to call Brandenburg City Hall to sign up or they can sign up just prior to the meeting. Speaking times will be limited to allow the most comments. A copy of the purposed ordinance is available for public inspection at city hall.
In other business, the council heard and approved the second reading of ordinances amending the current fiscal year budget and the proposed 2025-26 fiscal year budget. The council also approved the second reading of an ordinance for water and sewer rates which increase by 2 percent. Basic rates will increase to $19.07 for the 1st 2,000 gallons for in city limit customers and $26.48 for the 1st 2,000 gallons customers outside of the city limits. The sewer rates will increase to $26.50.
Council members received information on a state senate bill related to street legal special purpose vehicles. The state seeks to allow local leaders to regulate the use of special vehicles which must have the same safety equipment as a regular motor vehicles and must be inspected and display special license plate. The council took no action but could consider the issue during a future meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting, Jonah Voelker was sworn as new police officer with the Brandenburg Police Department. He replaces Officer Tyler Mitcham, who resigned from the department. Voelker comes to the department from the Meade County Sheriff’s Office. Jeff & Kay Embrey was awarded the June Yard of Month.
During the public comments, a representative of a newly formed tenant association at Maple Grove Apartments asked city leaders for assistance compiling a list of code violations and safety concerns at the complex. They city does not have a code enforcement officer to handle such issues and legalities prevent police officers form performs certain duties needed for their request. City officials are working to get a meeting scheduled with the city fire marshall to assist in a resolve in the issue.
