A Louisville man faces more than a dozen charges, including DUI, in connection with a deadly hit-and-run Sunday morning in the Taylor Berry neighborhood.
Louisville Metro police said officers were called to the 2700 block of 7th Street Road around 4:40 a.m. on a report a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle.
Based on their initial investigation and a witness statement, investigators believe the woman was hit by a vehicle as she stepped into the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the vehicle that hit her never stopped, hitting another vehicle farther down 7th Street Road before continuing to leave the area.
On Monday morning, the Louisville Metro Police Department announced the arrest of the alleged driver, 39-year-old Anthony Billingslea.
According to court documents, Billingslea was arrested just after 12 a.m. Monday on charges of vehicular homicide, two counts of failure to report a traffic accident, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, criminal mischief, failure to wear a seat belt, three counts of wanton endangerment, two counts of tampering with physical evidence and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid or assistance.
Police said Billingslea hit the victim, identified in court documents as Carolyn Lindsey, and took off at “a high rate of speed” going southbound on 7th Street Road. In the process, police said he rear-ended a vehicle with three people inside, causing more than $1,000 in damage to the vehicle, and, again, did not stop.
Billingslea ran away after abandoning the vehicle at an apartment complex, according to police. Investigators were able to get in contact with a witness who said they were with Billingslea throughout the night and saw him “actively consuming alcohol.”
The witness told police Billingslea was “highly intoxicated all throughout the night.”
A witness who lives near the scene of the hit-and-run, who wished to stay anonymous, said police were already nearby after he had called to complain about people parked illegally near his home for a party. He thinks the victim may have been leaving the party when she was hit.
In court for his arraignment Monday morning, Billingslea pleaded not guilty and Judge Kristina Garvey set his bond at $500,000 cash.
