Officers with the Jeffersontown Police Department shot and killed a robbery suspect when the man pulled a semi-automatic weapon from his waistband, Chief Rick Sanders said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Sanders said a customer walking into the Jimmy John’s at 3121 South Hurstbourne Parkway was robbed at gunpoint shortly after noon on Tuesday. The victim and restaurant manager gave police a description of the gunman.
Upon arrival at 12:42 p.m., officers were able to track the man down to the Holiday Inn next door, where they saw the man place a backpack behind a dumpster. Sanders said the officers told the man to put his hands into the air and to stop running. At that point, Sanders said, the suspect pulled a gun out of his waistband, and the officers fired several shots, striking him multiple times.
Sanders said while the officers were attempting first aid on the man, a syringe loaded with suspected heroin fell out of the man’s pocket. The suspect was taken to University of Louisville Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.
Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the shooting is completed.
The Louisville Metro Police Department’s Evidence Tech Unit will help investigate the incident.
