Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is joining other Kentucky Community and Technical College System schools in educating its faculty, staff and students about sexual assault.
Under the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, signed into law by President Barack Obama in March 2013, the Campus Sexual Violence Act — or SaVE Act — provision poses obligations on universities and colleges to adopt policies that address and prevent campus sexual violence.
All students at ECTC are required to complete a training called Campus Clarity by November 20. Students are emailed a unique link to complete the training. ECTC’s faculty and staff also are required to complete a similar training.
Samantha Mackenzie, ECTC student life advisor, said the program helps educate students on the meaning of consent and what qualifies as sexual assault.
The college also is working to bring awareness to students about cultural behaviors toward sexual violence and local resources.
Mackenzie said statistically, one out of four women are victims of sexual assault and one out of 11 men are.
