Firearm sales were on the rise at this weekend’s Kenny Woods Gun and Knife Show as gun owners fear Obama’s proposed executive action.
The three-day gun show at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center wraps up just ahead of a meeting set for Monday between President Obama and Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
The president announced the meeting during his weekly address. He says he plans to meet with Attorney General Lynch to discuss options to use his executive authority to stiffen gun control laws.
Specifics of the President’s plans are unknown, though he’s expected to use his executive powers to close the so-called gun show and online loop hole.
Gun purchases through these means allow buyers to avoid the background check required when a buyer makes a purchase through a Federal Firearms Licensed gun dealer.
In 2013, the Senate defeated a compromise plan to expand background checks on firearms sales that included a proposal to ban some semi-automatic, assault-style weapons.
Obama has also been vocal in the past for calling for an end to gun sales to those people on terror watch lists.
Some gun owners fear restrictions won’t end there, signaling a spike in sales.
In the wake of the mass shooting in San Bernardino, CA and as Louisville tries to move past a deadly year, marked by gun violence, President Obama promises to take action.
There’s no set timetable of when Obama plans to enact his executive order, but those close to the matter expect him to take action before his final State of the Union address as president on January 12.
