The Louisville Metro Police Department is restructuring its homicide unit in an effort to solve more cases.
Media outlets report that all shootings are now being investigated by the homicide unit, regardless of whether a fatality has been reported. Before, nonfatal shootings were investigated at the division level.
LMPD is also adding eight new detectives to the homicide unit, bringing the total to 25. Police hope this will help to not only solve more cases, but to solve them more quickly.
Major David Ray says there were 348 shootings in 2015. Louisville Metro Police handled 79 homicide cases last year, up from 56 in 2014.
