The Bardstown Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying three people suspected of passing fake cash at Walmart.
Captain Tom Roby said about $800 worth of counterfeit money was used at the Bardstown Walmart within a 30-day period.
It’s possible the three are not from the Bardstown area but are believed to be hitting other place in the area.
Roby said Bardstown Police Department had been contacted by other agencies about the issue, believing the trio could be the same that has reportedly hit Walmarts — and possibly other stores — in Radcliff, Hardinsburg, Bowling Green and Lebanon.
As for the cash, Roby said the fake bills range from $10 to $100 and they are very genuine looking bills.
This is not the first time Nelson County has been hit by counterfeiters. Several cases have popped up over the past few years.
Earlier this month, two men were indicted on 15 counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument after attempting to pass fake $100s at area stores in Bardstown. Roby said the bills involved in that instance were good, but the recent spree has been of higher quality.
He said there are some bills that have a noticeable discoloration on the paper where they were not trimmed properly that make them identifiable as counterfeit.
As Bardstown Police Department continues to work with agencies to identify the suspects and determine if there is a connection to other cases and where the money might be coming from, it is asking anyone with information to contact the department at 502-348-6811 or Nelson County Dispatch at 502-348-3211.
