Muldraugh’s only fast-food restaurant temporarily closed Tuesday morning after a fire, which authorities say started when a discarded cigarette caused mulch to ignite.
The fire at Dairy Queen on U.S. 31W in Muldraugh resulted from the same circumstances blamed for destruction of McDonald’s in front of Towne Mall in Elizabethtown last week.
Muldraugh Assistant Fire Chief Anthony Lee said the building suffered minor damage. He said employees noticed smoke in the kitchen area apparently entering through the air conditioning vents.
Lee said firefighters determined a cigarette smoldering in a mulch bed eventually caused a flame that ignited the building’s stucco exterior and burned the foam insulation.
The fire call was issued at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday. Lee said flames were extinguished within 30 minutes. He said repairs are underway and Dairy Queen should reopen later this week.
Muldraugh volunteers were assisted by firefighters from Meade County, Flaherty and West Point departments.
