Six hats worth a total of $5,546 that were on display at My Old Kentucky Home have been stolen, according to a spokesperson for the hat designer.
Blake R. Seidel, who represents Christine A. Moore Millinery of New York, said the hats were part of a special Kentucky Derby exhibit titled “The Race Is On” at My Old Kentucky Home. The exhibit, which ran from April 15 to May 31, 2016, also featured some of Kentucky’s most notable racing silks, mint julep cups and other items.
Museum staff told millinery officials the hats had been boxed up after the event ended in preparation for shipment back to New York. The millinery contacted My Old Kentucky Home because it never received the shipment of hats. Museum staff members searched the property for the box, but they never found it. The hats were reported stolen on Thursday, September 8.
Seidel said three of the hats were iconic one-of-a-kind pieces that are not in any of Christine A. Moore’s collections. The most expensive hat is worth $2,395.
Seidel said if someone attempts to wear any of the hats to the Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks, the hats will be recognized.
Anyone who knows what happened to the hats should call Matthew Bailey at My Old Kentucky Home at 270-847-1488.
