A former Bardstown police officer is suing the city for millions of dollars.
Assistant Police Chief Tom Roby was fired by Mayor John Royalty earlier this year. Royalty claimed Roby shredded piles of documents and wiped his hard drive when the department was being restructured.
Roby maintains the documents he destroyed were duplicates and that he had authorization to do so.
According to court documents in the lawsuit, Roby is seeking at least $2.7 million. That amount includes $1 million for embarrassment, humiliation and emotional anguish. Another $1.7 million is being sought for punitive damages.
Roby could change the amount he is requesting later in the proceedings.
