Despite a last-ditch lawsuit to keep it in place, the controversial Confederate monument is coming down.
Work to deconstruct the 121-year-old monument, which is located on Third Street in front of the University of Louisville campus, took place Saturday (11/19) morning. It’s next destination is Brandenburg.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Russell denied a last-minute request for a restraining order, saying the plaintiff had no chance of winning his suit.
Second and Third Streets are completely closed as the monument is being moved. One lane will reopen in both directions on Wednesday.
The monument, which was given to Louisville in 1895, commemorates the Kentuckians who died in the Civil War. It will be moved to Brandenburg later this month.
