After delays from earlier in the week due to weather, traffic patterns have been set as of Friday (12/2) for the new phase of construction as widening I-65 to six lanes continues in Hardin, LaRue and Hart Counties.
According to Chris Jesse, Public Information Officer for the Elizabethtown office of the Transportation Cabinet, the most significant change is for Southbound motorists. Access to Exits 81 (Sonora), 76 (Upton) and 71 (Bonnieville) is only available from the right lane. Southbound traffic is now flowing in two divided lanes through these areas. Anyone needing access to Sonora, Upton or Bonnieville but misses the right lane at the “split” (ending up in the left lane) must continue to Exit 65 (Munfordville) and then go northbound on I65 or US 31W. Signs are posted well in advance of the “split”. Motorists should pay close attention to signage, slow down in this area and minimize distractions.
Further South, work is nearing completion and three Southbound lanes are now open on a new surface between Exits 71 (Bonnieville) and 65 (Munfordville). Northbound traffic should be open to three lanes in that same segment within the next two or three weeks.
The widening project is expected to be complete by the end of 2017 and join up to the six lanes in Elizabethtown and will result in a six lane interstate through all of the state north to south.
