A historical landmark now stands tall on the shoreline where many of the people it honors took a stand centuries ago.
On Monday (12/12) workers finalized a historic move of the Confederate Monument in the Brandenburg Riverfront Park. Crews placed the two bronze soldier statues on each side of the monument around 2 pm. After a final check of the structure, workers informed Meade County Judge Executive Gerry Lynn that the project was complete and the structure with less than a one sixteenth of a inch off plumb. Workers believe the new foundation along the articulate work of the constructions crews made structure closer to grade than in it’s original location.
The monument is the second tallest monument in the state of Kentucky, which stands seventy feet tall and weighs 140,000 pounds. Each of the 25 pieces of the monument, rest upon each other from the ground up supported by a solid concrete foundation in addition to lead along each joint.
The curiosity of the historical event has brought a number of local and regional spectators to the park to watch the progress of the project. Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that the monument will bring additional tourism to the city which will help the local economy.
Local leaders are planning to finalize site work and landscaping around the monument before a spring dedication ceremony.
