None of the seven spelunkers rescued from a rain-flooded section of Binkley Caverns needed hospital treatment, but all suffered hypothermia from exposure.
Ramsey Vance, Harrison County Emergency Services Coordinator said, “They’re experienced cavers. They were prepared for the trip. They just got caught in it.”
The group had been expected to exit the cave system about 3 am Sunday. When members failed to report, Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources launched an effort to find them that included expertise from the National Cave Rescue Association and the National Speological Society. The water was chest-deep that the cavers and their rescuers had to traverse. The group had been in the caverns about eighteen hours before rescue teams made contact.
Two of the seven were removed from the cave before midnight. The others were removed early Monday morning. All were treated at the scene.
