A Hardin County man charged with murder was convicted Thursday of two lesser charges.
A Hardin Circuit Court jury found 22 year-old Martin Barrington guilty of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree wanton endangerment and driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was arrested after a vehicle he was driving slammed into a Radcliff residence after running off the road at more than 100 mph on December 18, 2015.
Derrick Cleveland Jr., 23, a backseat passenger in his vehicle was killed. Another passenger, who was injured, testified as the three-day trial opened Monday.
Jurors will return Friday to begin a sentencing recommendation. He faces five to 10 years in prison and will be parole eligible after serving 20-percent of his sentence on the Class C felony.
During his testimony Thursday morning, Barrington said he had been in three substance abuse programs shortly after returning from a nine-moth tour in Kuwait as a member of the 19th Engineer Battalion at Fort Knox in August 2014.
Two days following his release from an inpatient program at Lincoln Trail Behavioral Hospital in Radcliff, where he said he was doing so well that he led Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, he returned to drinking.
That same day, Cleveland was killed when Barrington lost control of the car while driving north on North Logsdon Parkway. The car collided with a utility pole, a tree and then went airborne 121 feet before flying into the brick of a home. Cleveland was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner’s Office.
Another passenger in the car, Stanley Crawford, also received non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
