Secretary of the Army Mark Esper made his first visit Friday (4/6) to Fort Knox since he began the job a little over four months ago.
During his visit, Esper met with senior leaders on post and participated Friday morning in physical training with the soldiers of the 19th Engineer Battalion. He also met with leaders from U.S. Army Human Resources Command, had a round-table discussion with soldier and officer spouses and met with U.S. Army Cadet Command. He met with U.S. Army Reserve Aviation Command to get a feel for how the Reserves are doing and to learn about some of its unique challenges.
HRC is one of the commands Esper will work with to implement a new talent management system in the Army. He said officials will take a closer look at an individuals’ knowledge, skills, behaviors and preferences to more effectively match those to what the Army needs. Esper’s visit to Fort Knox also helped him see the integration of all three components of the Army; active duty, National Guard and Reserves, work well in operational elements around the world.
Esper said taking care of soldiers and their families are a top priority for him as families are critical to the mission of the Army. Esper said he was impressed with his visit to Fort Knox and hopes to visit again to spend time with Recruiting Command and come back in the summer to see cadets training on post.
