Summer is the peak season for buying a car, which also means it is the peak season for car buying scams.
The good news if you are on the search, prices are down a bit. The bad news, scammers are everywhere online trying to rip you off.
One man is out more than $1,000 after finding a Toyota Tacoma on the “LetGo” app.
Like Facebook Marketplace, Wallpop, and Craigslist, these sites are targets for scammers.
They advertise a very low price and want a deposit via gift cards or Venmo before you even see the car or truck.
The seller asked him to buy 3 – $500 Amazon gift cards for the deposit. Once he sent them, he never heard back.
To protect yourself, the Federal Trade Commission says:
Never pay a deposit via Zelle, Venmo, or gift cards
Beware of cars that seem to be priced too low
Avoid buying cars that you can’t see in person
Bottom line: Be suspicious if the prices seems too good to be true, so you don’t waste your money.
