The Barren River Lake State Resort Park has announced the beaches will reopen Friday (06/28) after a closure due to flooding.
According to resort park manager, Danny Sallee, the flooding that took place throughout May and June caused water to get so high there was no beach for guests to visit.
Sallee said it was about 15 feet above the summer pool after the heavy rains. It has taken a good six weeks or so for it to recede to where it is now, which is still about three feet over the normal summer pool level.
Along with flooding, Sallee said debris within the water caused problems that contributed to the cleanup process. Large trees and driftwood had to be removed by maintenance crews before opening the beaches could be discussed.
Sallee said his maintenance crew has been hard at work getting driftwood off the beach and getting the park ready for guests in time for their major July 4 summer event.
Park management expects around 10,000 guests to attend the fireworks show on July 4, with many viewing the show from the newly re-opened beaches.
Beaches will open on Friday, June 28 beginning at 10 a.m.
Normal hours will also resume, with the beach being open daily from 10 a.m. until sunset.
