A Louisville man was arrested Saturday after a kidnapping incident turned into a police chase between Indiana and Kentucky.
Louisville Metro police said Saturday afternoon, 19 year-old Alexander Mask had refused to give back his girlfriend’s son, leading police and family members on a chase throughout the city. Eventually, Mask dropped the child with one of the family members and continued to flee.
Officials said detectives then followed Mask across the Ohio River. They contacted Indiana State Police and Floyd County police to pull Mask over. Both agencies tried to stop Mask, but he drove away.
According to an arrest report, Mask made it to the Sherman Minton Bridge where he stopped his car in the middle of the road and got out. He then went to the car behind him and forced the driver out onto the road while she was screaming. Mask then got inside her car. While Mask was getting into the stolen car, a Floyd County officer tried to stop him by blocking the door but hurt his arm in the process. Mask continued to lead police on a chase for another 20 minutes.
Officials said Louisville Metro Police detectives were eventually able to pull the car over near the intersection of Cane Run Road and Terry Road and arrest Mask.
Mask is charged with robbery, assault of a police officer, fleeing or evading police, and not having registered plates for Saturday’s chase. For the kidnapping incident beforehand, he is also charged with kidnaping a minor, leaving the scene of an accident, two more counts of fleeing from police, wanton endangerment, criminal abuse of a child younger than 12, reckless driving, criminal mischief, failure of wear a seat belt and speeding 25 miles per hour over the limit. He pleaded not guilty, and his bond was set at $100,000.
Mask is expected back in court July 23.
