Three people died in Nelson County Sunday night during the storms but were not storm related.
The Northeast Nelson Fire Protection District was dispatched to a possible vehicle in a pond in the 300 block of Chaplin Road around 11:30 p.m. Sunday after a caller told dispatch they could see tail lights. Crews arrived to find a vehicle partially submerged in the pond about 65 feet from the pond’s bank.
Crews used a boat to get to the vehicle, but by then, it had completely submerged and crews couldn’t determine if there was a person inside. Taylorsville Spencer County Fire Department’s dive team was brought in and they entered the pond, found the vehicle and determined there was someone inside.
The Nelson County Coroner’s Office has identified that person as 72-year-old Gregory Phipps and said his injuries and conditions supported that of having a medical condition before he landed in the pond and his death was not related to the storm.
The circumstances around this crash, in the middle of a storm, make his death seem unusual. However, the coroner said deadly medical issues simply happen at any time, and in Phipps’ case, during a drive home along Chaplin Road.
Phipps’ death marked the third in two hours first responders were called to in the county. All three were not storm-related, but the storms did make response efforts more challenging.
Teressa Sparks, 56 of New Haven, died at home with respiratory distress. Earl Farris of Bardstown passed away in hospice care.
