Louisville Metro Police arrested a Louisville man on April 14 in connection to a case involving an ambulance stolen from a downtown Louisville hospital earlier this year.
According to arrest citations, 31-year-old George Russell was arrested on Monday and is facing multiple new charges relating to both the ambulance incident and several other thefts, assaults and burglaries.
Around 7:30 p.m., February 28, Louisville Metro Police Department said Russell was in the ambulance bay at UofL Health-Jewish Hospital when he climbed into the ambulance belonging to the St. Matthews Fire Department and drove off. The theft was recorded on surveillance cameras, which police released in March.
Video from a camera at a nearby business allegedly showed Russell ditching the ambulance a short distance away and then fleeing down an alley.
Then on Monday night, April 14, a Louisville Metro Police officer spotted Russell in the downtown area and recognized him as a suspect in several active criminal cases, according to an arrest citation.
The officer tried to arrest Russell, but he allegedly ran, trying to gain entry to Louisville Slugger Field before being tased and taken into custody. Russell had seven active e-warrants at the time of his arrest, according to police.
Russell is now facing charges of fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, assault (2nd and 4th degree), violating probation, theft by unlawful taking over $10,000, three counts of burglary, robbery and criminal mischief.
Russell appeared in court Tuesday for arraignment and is being held at Metro Corrections. Russell pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $50,000. He was assigned a public defender and should be back in court on April 23.
