The month of June is officially Elder Abuse and Exploitation Awareness Month in Kentucky after Governor Andy Beshear signed a proclamation Friday morning.
Governor Beshear explained that 1 in 10 people over the age of 60 in Kentucky have experienced some type of elder abuse. It is an issue they are dealing with head-on this month.
Governor Beshear spoke in the Capitol Rotunda, filled with elders and advocates, recounting the work done in the state to prevent abuse.
He credited Team Kentucky for initiatives like capping insulin costs, Launching PACE programs and even encouraged lawmakers to vote against legislation putting Medicaid in jeopardy. He said 70 percent of Kentucky’s long-term care costs come through Medicaid.
Victoria Elridge, commissioner, Department for Aging and Independent Living, said whether physical, emotional, financial, or neglect, it is often experienced in silence or isolation.
Notable figures preventing elder abuse were recognized.
The Lexington Fire Department Community Paramedicine received the Champion of Adult Maltreatment Prevention award for their work preventing abuse.
Students from Bath County High School who created a curriculum of adult maltreatment awareness were recognized.
Ahead of the weekend, attendees planted purple flags outside the state capitol honoring elders who inspired them.
World Elder Abuse Prevention Day is this Sunday, June 15.
