A SWAT situation Friday led to the arrest of a Louisville man on domestic violence charges.
Louisville police said on June 13, they were called to an apartment building in the 3300 block of Bardstown Road on the report of a man holding a woman at gunpoint. There, officers reportedly got the victim to safety, and the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Yerahmeel Castro, barricaded himself inside his apartment.
Police said they then called in SWAT and the domestic violence unit.
According to court documents, the victim told police she had been living with Castro, but he had been awake for the last two days, intoxicated on drugs, and had been acting paranoid since. She said they had gotten into a verbal argument that morning, and while she was trying to leave, Castro hit her in the back of the head with her purse.
Court documents say the woman left the apartment and was walking in the area when the person who would end up calling 911 stopped to help her. Together, they went back to the apartment to get the victim’s belongings, but when they got there, Castro allegedly answered the door holding a handgun.
According to police, Castro began to raise the gun, and the victim stepped in between him and the caller. Castro then reportedly told the victim to get inside. She went inside and hid in the bathroom for around an hour until the police knocked on the door. Castro allegedly told her to answer the door and if she didn’t tell police to leave, there would be a ‘shoot-out.’
Police said they were able to get the victim out of the apartment after answering the door.
According to police, Castro then barricaded himself inside of the apartment. SWAT eventually got him out and arrested him. After executing a search warrant, police said they found drugs and a gun inside the apartment.
Castro is charged with unlawful imprisonment, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, intimidating a participant in a legal process, assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking in Marijuana, and trafficking in a controlled substance.
His bond was set at $75,000.
