A massive data center planned for southwest Louisville is one step closer to becoming a reality.
A Development Review Committee gave unanimous approval that will allow the center to locate in an industrial area on Campground Road.
Critics expressed concern over the facility’s consumption of electricity and water.
According to LG&E, the data center is expected to eventually use roughly 400 megawatts, equivalent to the approximate annual consumption of 280 thousand residential customers.
Some also questioned the possible noise and asked the city for caution.
The data center now has approval to locate on 149.5 acres, largely covered with tall grass and trees.
Plans include the construction of 7 buildings, each roughly the size of 3 football fields.
There will also be a switchyard, an electrical substation, and back-up generators.
Development Review Committee approval is just one step toward the construction of the data center.
Developers also require approval from the city for building plans.
