A harmful algal bloom has been confirmed at Paradise Camp on Herrington Lake, with additional bloom activity also reported near Tanyard Branch, also known as Redgate.
State officials say people should limit contact with the water in these areas and stay alert, as other sections of the lake may also be affected.
At this time, drinking water drawn from Herrington Lake remains safe and is being closely monitored, according to the Kentucky Division of Water.
Officials say they will continue to assess water conditions and issue updates as needed.
Harmful algal blooms are caused by toxin-producing cyanobacteria—commonly known as blue-green algae—which grow rapidly in warm water following heavy rainfall. The blooms often resemble bright green paint or slicks of sawdust on the water’s surface.
The Kentucky Division of Water recommends avoiding swimming or recreational contact with visibly affected water.
