Kentucky State Auditor Allison Ball has released a special examination of the Kentucky Department of Education.
The review comes after a bill was passed in 2024, requiring an audit of the department.
The auditor’s review found that the Department of Education allowed $250 million in SEEK funds to lapse instead of reallocating that money to cover funding shortfalls.
Auditor Ball also highlighted the department’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, calling it a “waste of money,” saying there has been no noticeable difference in student outcomes.
The audit also found the Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association are not mitigating the risk of sexual harassment and abuse of student-athletes.
Ball says a lot of what is in the 500-page report will make its way to proposed legislation to be considered in next year’s session.
Ball said “We are not just looking for wastefulness. We are not looking at just fraud. We are here looking at much more.”
Auditor Ball says following this audit, the Kentucky Department of Education created resources for sexual assault prevention and awareness.
The report says the Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Board of Education lack measurable benchmarks for gauging student success.
Auditor Ball added the state Board of Education is failing to oversee the Department of Education.
