Two suspects have been charged with stealing more than 400 pounds of explosives from a Louisville construction site.
According to officials, the explosives were stolen in the early morning of Wednesday, April 1.
Suspects, 44 year-old James Culver and 39 year-old Lasierra Chesher were arrested on Thursday, April 2, and are accused of stealing a total of 438 pounds of explosives.
According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky, police received a tip, leading to the arrests and recovery of the explosives.
Culver and Chesher are believed to have driven to the construction site, where Culver broke the locks to gain entry and steal the explosives. The suspects are said to have then stored the explosives at another person’s residence before returning home.
When confronted by police at the home, Culver attempted to flee, but both suspects were taken into custody. Culver then admitted to the theft of the explosives.
While searching the home, police found a box full of blasting caps, a .22 caliber rifle, ammo, a shockwave exploding target, and multiple explosive labels and instructional materials.
Culver is being charged with theft of explosive material, possession of explosive material and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person due to being convicted of multiple felonies in the past.
Chesher is being charged with theft of explosive material and possession of explosive material by a prohibited person due to having been convicted of felonies in the past.
Culver faces up to 35 years in prison, while Chesher faces up to 20 years.
LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said LMPD’s Bomb Squad, Homeland Security Unit, SWAT Team, Fugitive Unit, Drone Unit, and Sixth Division Patrol worked seamlessly alongside their ATF partners to help recover the stolen explosives and protect our community.
