A Glasgow man was arrested over the weekend after police say he stole a school bus from Glasgow High School.
According to an arrest citation, officers responded Saturday afternoon to a Dollar General near the school after officials reported the bus was in the parking lot. The bus showed visible scratches on the rear, passenger side, and front, which officials said appeared to be recent.
Glasgow Independent Schools Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp said he was notified about the bus and reviewed GPS data, which showed it was started around 4:34 a.m., left the school, traveled along Coral Hill Road, made a stop, and later arrived at the Dollar General, where it was parked around 5:27 a.m.
Security camera footage showed 18-year-old Tayesean M. Barlow entering the bus with a flashlight and, at one point, appearing to have what looked like a drum magazine on a handgun in his waistband.
Authorities said he was later seen sitting in the driver’s seat, starting the bus, and driving it before stopping to speak with someone out of view. He then drove a short distance and parked the bus.
Police later went to Barlow’s home along Coral Hill Road, where they spoke with his mother. She told officers she knew why they were there, referring to “the bus,” and said she had instructed her son to return it after he brought it home.
Barlow later came outside and was taken into custody. While at the Barren County Detention Center, he told police he had been with friends at “the bricks,” a slang term for the Arbors of Glasgow apartment complex, and decided to leave after “things got a little crazy.”
He said he saw the bus on his way home and went inside to see if he could get in. Once inside, he found the keys and decided to take it home because he did not want to walk, according to the citation.
Barlow also told police the handgun in his waistband was a 9mm firearm given to him by his grandfather.
He remains jailed on a $25,000 cash bond and is charged with theft by unlawful taking ($10,000 to $1 million), second-degree criminal mischief, unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, and operating on a suspended or revoked license.
