After 13 days, former governor Matt Bevin walked free from the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (09/16).
Bevin is a free man after a Kentucky Court of Appeals Judge Allison Jones granted his emergency release late Wednesday, stating his incarceration could be unlawful. Bevin was serving a 60-day sentence, all part of an ongoing child support case.
Family Court Judge Angela Johnson found Bevin in contempt of court, issuing a warrant for his arrest in June. He was arrested September 4 in Bourbon County while working as an extra on a Christmas movie.
In court, Judge Johnson said Bevin constantly failed to turn over key financial documents related to his child support case.
Bevin had petitioned the court September 9 to stop enforcing the judge’s arrest warrant and incarceration terms so that he could be released from the jail.
Attorney Nick Mudd says the court will need to specify whether or not this is a civil or criminal case.
He also explains that in future hearings, the court will need to decide what specific documents Bevin needs to become compliant.
The appeals court said Bevin proved that he was never given a chance to fight the contempt charge, but Mudd says this does not excuse Bevin from ignoring Judge Johnson’s order.
