A Louisville man is behind bars following an investigation into dozens of violent text messages aimed at the University of Louisville campus community and sports fans.
Court records show 40-year-old Kenneth Barnett was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with second-degree terroristic threatening.
According to an arrest citation, the investigation began after Barnett allegedly sent more than 100 threatening text messages om September 15 to a relative of a UofL athletics department employee. Investigators said the messages warned of mass violence across campus and specifically mentioned targeting tailgaters at an upcoming athletic event, prompting the recipient to notify the University of Louisville Police Department out of concern for campus safety.
“You better barbed wire fence your entire campus if you don’t think I won’t slaughter your little *expletive* student body,” one message said.
Barnett’s bond was set at $75,000 full cash, and a public defender was appointed. He is also ordered to have no weapons and no contact with anyone connected to UofL.
Police also suggested Barnett be held for a mental evaluation.
