A Louisville man was arrested Thursday after officers found a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse bag filled with marijuana baggies directly in front of his one-year-old child, who was unsecure in a car seat.
Damorion Murrell, 21, is facing the following charges, according to court documents:
Trafficking in marijuana (Between 8 oz and 5 lbs.)
Endangering the welfare of a minor
Failure to use child restraint device in vehicle
Convicted felon in possession of a handgun
Failure to wear seat belts
At about 11:30 a.m., a sergeant with the Louisville Metro Police Department saw Murrell’s vehicle traveling over 50 mph in a posted 35 mph with no seatbelt, according to his arrest citation.
Once the traffic stop was initiated, the sergeant saw Murrell putting on his seatbelt and the officer said he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Murrell told the officer there was a roach in the ash tray.
During a search of the vehicle, the sergeant found a brown Glock 9mm handgun under the driver’s seat. Because of the way the gun was oriented, investigators believe Murrell placed the firearm under the seat when he was being pulled over.
The sergeant found a brown carry-out bag from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, filled with 38 individual baggies of marijuana that appeared to be packaged for sale.
The bag of drugs was found directly in front of his one-year-old child, who was unrestrained in a car seat, loose in the backseat, according to his arrest citation.
Murrell has several prior felony cases, including a 2024 incident where he was charged with complicity to murder as a 17-year-old.
Murrell is currently being held at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on a $5,000 bond. He is expected in court for his arraignment on November 2.
