The Logan County Sheriff’s department is warning people of a phone scam in the area.
The sheriff’s department says people are getting calls from a number with an 876 area code, telling them they won a sweepstakes or a car. The victim is prompted to send money through Western Union to pay taxes on their winnings before they receive them.
Victims may also receive calls from a person posing as a special agent with the FBI who requests personal information to prosecute the scammers. The personal information is then used to access the victim’s bank account. The person posing as a special agent may also ask for a blank check with the victim’s signature claiming the check is needed for a signature comparison. The scammers use the signature to forge the victim’s name.
Other area codes like 187, 415, 614, 478, and 702 may also be used.
