Routine bridge maintenance will remain ongoing for a few more weeks as road crews from the Indiana Department of Transportation will continue inspections of the Matthew Welsh Bridge that connects Brandenburg, Kentucky and Mauckport, Indiana.
Motorists have encountered a work zone near the bridge the past few weeks. Motorists will encounter some lengthy delays as inspectors will be examining stress cracks and fractures in the steel supports of the bridge structure on Thursday (1/7). The results of the examination of the structure will determine the repair schedule to the structure.
Motorists should be prepared to add extra time to their commute across the bridge or avoid the route if possible.
Named after the 41st Indiana Governor, the Matthew Welsh Bridge is 3,098 feet long and was built at a cost of $5.5 million, financed mainly by the State of Indiana in 1964 and opened to traffic in November 1966. The current maintenance work is schedule to continue until January 29 according to the INDOT.
