The Glasgow Police Department is warning of an insurance scam being reported locally and across the country.
A Glasgow resident received a notification letter in the mail that was allegedly from Nationwide Insurance advising them that they were the beneficiary of a $75,000 settlement.
The letter contained a check addressed to the resident. The check appeared to be from Nationwide, having the Nationwide logo and address on it.
The letter instructed the resident to contact them for information on the settlement. When the resident contacted the number, they were told to cash the check and return a portion of the money to Nationwide to pay for processing of the settlement.
If the resident had fallen victim to the scam, they would have been responsible for the full amount of the check.
The Glasgow Police Department confirmed through the Nationwide Fraud Department that they have received complaints from victims across the country reporting similar incidents.
If you receive a similar letter, you should contact your local law enforcement agency as well as the Nationwide Fraud Department at 1-800-474-7633.
