Hardin County property owners will be receiving a new postcard in the mailbox this week from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.
Changing the format from a letter style to postcard equates to a postage savings of more than $10,000 for county government. Instead of 47 cents each to mail a letter in an envelope, the postcards cost only 28 cents each to mail.
Despite the format change, the information basically appears in the same format with tax rates, evaluations and total amount due itemized for each taxing district followed by any applicable fee for property in volunteer fire department service areas. Although produced by the county clerk’s office and collected by the sheriff’s staff, it includes state, school district and taxes imposed by other agencies such as soil conservation, Extension Service and county health department.
The final data lists the total bill beginning with the 2-percent discount if paid in November. All payments made in December are at face value with penalties applied on taxes paid after the new year. The bills go in the mail Monday and should arrive within days. Residents are reminded to bring the bill along when making payment at the sheriff’s office in the county government building or to send it with your check if paying by mail.
