A vital part of Louisville’s workforce voted Tuesday to determine if they have a new contract deal.
Some 4,000 workers from GE’s Appliance Park denied the contract from their new China-based owner Haier. Before the vote, union officials said it was a tough decision to consider with no raises in the deal. But, they reminded workers this is a new time and they’re not negotiating with GE anymore.
The 4-year contract from new owner Haier was not so well received. Cutbacks on overtime and seniority combined with no raises was a tough pill to swallow, as rising health costs are eventually coming to worker’s benefits.
In the agreement, the company sought keeping wages the same and offering workers a total of $5,500 over the next three years in place of raises and what it called a strong benefits package. The company maintains it has not only lost millions, but is investing millions in Louisville’s Appliance Park.
Union officials said they will sit down with the negotiating team and request bargaining again from the company and hopefully go forward.
