A man was treated for a gun shot wound after he attempted to assault a police officer over the weekend.
Brandenburg Police and the Meade County Sheriff Department responded to a report of a domestic assault in the Rolling Heights neighborhood around 12:20 pm Saturday (10/14) afternoon. When officers arrived at the residence they found a female victim who had blood in her mouth and possibly had a broken jaw. Family members identified the assailant as 28 Year-old Justin Swink of Brandenburg, who had taken off on foot toward a wooded area near the residence.
Swink was found a short time later by Brandenburg Police Sergeant Ray Whited. As Officer Whited was attempting to handcuff the suspect, Swink got up from the ground with one handcuff on and started to fight with Whited. Swink struck Whited in the face a couple of times and tried to get his handgun from his holster. During the fight, Swink got behind Whited causing Whited to deploy his taser but missed Swink as he kept striking Whited.
Sergeant Whited started to pull his handgun Swink grabbed it trying to gain control of the weapon from behind Whited.
Whited was able to keep control of his handgun and fired one shot striking Swink in the left leg causing Swink to fall to the ground.
Swink was treated for his gunshot wound by Meade County EMS and then airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital by Air Methods. Sergeant Whited did not sustain any injuries. Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident. Sergeant Whited has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
