The General George Patton Museum of Leadership is scheduled to reopen August 16 after nine months of extensive renovations.
However, direct access from U.S. 31W will remain closed.
Patton Museum can be seen from the highway, but the parking lot gate has been sealed since late 2014 and visitors are required to go through the post’s security clearance. The museum is 1.7 miles from the main post entrance on Bullion Boulevard.
A traffic signal allowing safe access between the parking area and the four-lane U.S. 31W was removed after the gate was closed because of security protocols in 2014.
The museum long has been a major attraction for Hardin County and has been listed among the most visited sites in Kentucky.
Visitors will find a number of improvements to the museum, which was established in 1948.
Among changes are a new roof; heating, ventilation and air conditioning system with humidity control; sidewalk; awning over the sidewalk and entry area; ADA-compliant restrooms; a repaved parking lot; and additional lighting in the parking lot and along the sidewalk.
The museum’s focus remains on highlighting principles of leadership through engaging exhibits and the largest single collection of famed U.S. Army General George S. Patton Jr. artifacts.
To access the museum, visitors with no military ID card or installation entry pass must go to the Fort Knox Visitor Center off East Bullion Boulevard just before the main gate. Visitors must present a valid driver’s license to obtain an Automated Installation Entry pass.
Once visitors have scanned their pass at the Chaffee Gate and are permitted installation access, they should follow signs to the museum.
Parking and admission to the museum is free.
The museum’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It plans to be open on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
