
The Meade County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the loss of one of their own after a medical emergency claimed the life of a deputy.
According to a press release from the Meade County Sheriff’s Department, detectives and deputies were executing a search warrant in the 1200 block of Greer Road around 6:20 pm Saturday (9/21) evening. Deputy Chris Hulsey got into a physical altercation with a suspect. After the altercation, Deputy Hulsey suffered an apparent medical issue resulting in officers on the scene to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation until units from Meade County EMS and the Payneville Fire Department arrived at the scene.
Hulsey was taken to Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Indiana, where he was pronounced dead. The case is under investigation pending further medical review to determine the official cause of death. Hulsey worked over 30 years in emergency services with Meade County EMS, Meade County Fire Department, and previously Bullitt County EMS, and was a former Brandenburg City Councilman.
Deputy Hulsey noticed the suspect, identified as 50 year-old Terry Gonterman throwing a small container into the weeds. After the altercation, Deputy Hulsey recovered a metal film canister with two small bags of suspected meth.
Gonterman is facing charges including trafficking in a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest. Gonterman is being held at the Meade County Detention Center on a $100,000 full cash bond.
The investigation continues by the Meade County Sheriff’s Department.
