
The Brandenburg City Council worked through a busy agenda during their regular monthly meeting Monday (1/13) night.
Rachael Mangin of the Meade County Arts Council discussed the recent success of the 2019 Summer Concert Series and the combined efforts between the group, city and county on the new roof for the amphitheater. She said the group is working on the 2020 Summer Concert series which possibly five concerts including the annual fall Riverfest in the downtown Riverfront Park. Mangin said that some of the dates are would work along with other events to increase attendance and experiences within the community. She asked city leaders for a $1,500 donation to the non-profit organization, which aligns with previous monetary donations. She said the requested amount would cover most of the expenses for one of the bands in the series. After some discussion, the city council unanimously approved the request.
Council members heard requested information from City Planning and Zoning Chairman Lee Klockow related to businesses in a residential dwellings. Klockow said that upon review of the planning ordinances that sales of products that was not made with in the dwelling were not allowed. The council requested the information during their December regular meeting in discussing a business license application of a person who wanted to sell guns in an apartment. After discussion the council voted to reject the application tabled from the previous meeting.
The council asked Klockow about the possibility of allowing temporary RV parks within the city, specifically for construction workers that will be working on the Nucor project. Klockow’s recommendation based upon the zoning ordinances would be to have the City Board of Adjustment review the plan and possibly issue a temporary variance on situation conditions related to the issue. The RV park developer would have to follow all state and county guidelines to implement such a project.
Council members discussed and approved the sale of the original 550 acres of industrial land that is in the process being sold to Nucor Steel. The city was listed as one of the land holders of the property but had no money invested or will make any money on the transaction because county government held the debt of the property. The city is listed because they have appointed members on the Brandenburg-Meade County Industrial Authority.
City Clerk Amy Haynes reported that traffic and donation counts were down during this year’s Christmas By The River. She said that the weather hampered several days during the 2019 event. The city fireworks display will be rescheduled near the July 4th holiday but plans have been finalized on future event.
Councilman Bill Basham presented the idea of a possible resolution to support efforts to protect the Second Amendment related to gun rights. The council discussed the idea and stated that they support lawful guns rights and the Second Amendment of the US Constitution but felt that constituents needed to contact local state lawmakers and make their position known instead of the non partisan city council taking a partisan stand on the issue. No action was taken on the resolution.
The next regular meeting of the Brandenburg City Council is scheduled for Monday, February 10 at 7 pm.
