Members of Meade County Fiscal Court worked through their regular monthly business agenda in the same room for the first time in several months Tuesday (6/9) night.
The meeting was the first time all of the members have met in person since February due to CDc guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting and public hearing was streamed live by WVIH.com on the county’s website and at the media outlet’s “On Demand” page.
The evening began with a public hearing related to the alteration of the Ronnie Greenwell Commerce Road due to the Nucor project. The road is in the county maintenance system originally designed for traffic related to the growth of an industrial park and the now defunct Riverport. Nucor Steel purchase the majority of property along the roadway which will reduce the 1.46 miles to a tenth of a mile of county roadway to maintain as the entrance to the Nucor facility. During the business session of Meade County Fiscal Court, magistrates unanimously voted to approve the alteration after receiving no comments by mail, email, fax or in person by the public.
In other business, Fiscal Court approved the second reading of the proposed 2020-21 fiscal year budget which will begin on July 1. The court also approved the appointments of Jamie Brewer to the Ethics Commission; Robert Stith to the Payneville Fire District; and Rick Meyers to the Meade County Water District. Sam Prather was promoted to Solid Waste and Recycling manager as the court approved advertising open positions for a part time and a full time truck driver at the Solid Waste facility.
Magistrates approved requests by Meade County Clerk Judy Jordan to pay election precinct worker fees and the permission to use the E-Scan and E-Slate voting machines for the primary election to be held on June 23. The court approved the lowest of bid of $41,865 from Sheridan Mechanical for a new boiler for the court house. They also single bid for Information Technology services. Resolutions for a Homeland Security grant, CARES Act, and the industrial revenue bonds were approved by county leaders.
At the beginning of the meeting, Fiscal Court approved rezoning requests at 861 Watson Lane from A-2 to R-1; at 40 Gumwell Road R-4 to R-3; and an administrative rezoning request of B-2 to A-2 at 2620 Old Mill Road. A rezoning request from February related to an approximate 1,000 acres in six parcels owned by Yager Materials from A-2/R-1 to HI at 4,800 Cedar Flats Roads near Wolf Creek. The request was met with some opposition who don’t want the river property to be disturbed and mined away to a similar situation in nearby Battletown. Fiscal Court approved the initial re-zoning request until newer property owner, Mary Ann Tobin addressed Fiscal Court asking them to reconsider their vote and take a further review of the situation to help preserve the rural features of the community. After lengthy comments, the court voted to rescind their previous action and table it until their next meeting to allow magistrates to further review the matter and take a vote with more consideration.
