The Brandenburg City Council voted to rescind a previous vote to annex approximately 2215 acres on the east and southeast sides of the current city limits during their regular meeting Monday (2/14) night.
The council had voted in January to begin the process of annexation the area along and near Kentucky 933 to Monument Chemical. Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that further review of the idea it was not in the best interest for the city to move forward on the proposal when it was likely to be voted down by election. The area is not densely populated but the idea has drawn some critics in the community. Joyner said that if annexation failed in the public election, it could not be sought again for at least another five years.
In other business, the council discussed and approved rezoning of a triangle parcel of land that created between the Bypass and Broadway. City Planning Commission Chairman Lee Klocklow said a proposed Business would have a one way entrance from the slip ramp onto the property and a three lane entrance onto Broadway. The ramp entrance would be designed to where no exit can occur onto the ramp. The property owner is proposing building a Wendy’s Restaurant. The council approved the zoning request. Council members also heard and approved the first reading of an ordinance to amend city rezoning fees. A second reading is expected during their March regular meeting.
The council revisited a proposal from last month related to solutions for treatment of magnesium and iron at the water plant. Mayor Joyner said that estimated cost of the project would around $1.3 million to setup the water plant to filter the magnesium from the water. Council member Bradley Johnson countered that other options should be sought before taking action on a single proposal. Among his recommendation is to seek information from other water providers to see if they have the same issues and research further details on drilling deeper wells. After a lengthy discussion, the council approved a resolution beginning an application process to seek funding on the project while further information is obtained. The funds would be paid off over the course of twenty years.
The council approved a resolution related to America Rescue Plan Act. Mayor Joyner said that each full time employee would receive a one time payment of $2,500 as a thank you for their work during the covid-19 pandemic. The remaining funds will be used for several projects once the list is reviewed by Ross, Sinclair & Associates. A list of projects is expected to presented to the council by next month.
At the end of the meeting, Mayor Ronni Joyner read letter of resignation by council member Michael Kelly effective immediately. The council has thirty days to make an appointment.
