
The Brandenburg City Council worked through a busy special called meeting Tuesday (5/23) evening.
The council reviewed and discussed the proposed 2023-24 $6,933,436 budget which was presented by Mayor Bryan Claycomb. One of the main topics of conversation related to the base increase for city water customers. Mayor Claycomb said the increase was needed for the city to balance the utility section of the budget which has previously been adjusted by two percent for many years. He said the city has to be ran as a business and the city’s basic costs have increased to operate. The rate adjustment creates about a $5 increase for city water customers. The rate for the first 2,00 gallons of water are currently set at $13.17 will increase to $18.32. Rate for water customer outside of the city limits currently pay 20.30 for the first 2,000 gallons will increase to $25.45 beginning after July. After the discussion, the council heard the first reading of the proposed budget.
In other business, council members reviewed and discussed the an update to the city personnel policy. The document updates the document from 2014 and updates the pay scale for city employees. Some discussion was had related to how the new tier scale would work as it is designed to provide the Mayor and department heads flexibility to recruit and retain employees.
After the discussion, the council heard the first reading of the ordinance to update the Personnel Policy and the first readings of amendments of the current budget and water and sewer rates. The council heard and approved resolutions for a Grant Assistance Agreement for water line improvements along Old Ekron Road and to accept Main Street into the city maintenance system once work is complete on the side walk project and the resurfacing of the 0.285 mile of street.
