An large audience of about 150 gathered at the home environment building at the Meade County Fairgrounds Monday (7/8) evening to voice their opinion and views to the Brandenburg City Council.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Council voted to table the second reading of the proposed Business and Occupation License Fees ordinance which would create a one percent occupational tax and other new requirements for those own a business or work for a business within the city limits of Brandenburg. The topic has drawn hot debate within the past few weeks with majority of those who addressed the council are not in favor of the measure and believe it will cause a hardship on business owners and their employees.
Some business owners told council members that their business expansion plans hinged on the discussion of city leaders. Others who commented urged the council to understand that percentage would push the some residents into further financial hardships in the current economy while others questioned the need for such a revenue generation engine for the city’ budget.
After about an hour of comments, Mayor David Pace said that everyone’s comments would reviewed and be taken under serious consideration by the council as they attempt to evaluate the issue. He expects a council workshop to be scheduled before the next regular meeting of the city council on August 12.
In other business, the council approved the second readings of ordinances related to medical cannabis and adopting a code of conduct for all city buildings. They also conducted the first reading of an ordinance related to rezoning property owned by Carl Austin at 575 Bypass Road.
The council revisited a proposed ordinance related to the use of golf carts on city streets. The issue was tabled in January and after discussion Monday evening, a first reading was heard on a ordinance which would establish a regulations in order to operate a golf carts on city streets.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mark and Colleen Ledford was awarded the July Yard of the Month.
